CASTLE DE WILDT GENETICS

Golden Wildebeest Breeding Herd

During the past ten years, Caste de Wildt carefully procured a phenomenal golden wildebeest stud. Our female animals were selected to conform with our minimum requirement of  measuring between 22  5/8″ and 26  5/8″.

We were furthermore successful in breeding numerous Golden Wildebeest bulls with  SCI scores in excess of 90″. We are excited to offer the best breeding genetics with proven bloodlines and exceptional physiognomies to the industry. In utilising the proprietary Unistel intra-herd kinship and diversity indexes we are confident that we have selected the best suited and most unrelated bulls for our herds.

The Castle de Wildt hereditary line is proven and respected throughout the wildlife industry of South Africa, and now also in Namibia.

MD Genetics

MD is the signature breeding bull of Castle de Wildt. Meassuring 49 5/8″ at present, he is still growing and is expected to break the 50″ barrier soon. As a proven fertile bull, his first progeny are approaching 12 months and already showing supreme breeding potential. For the 2017 breeding season, MD is grouped with selected prime females and top quality OD heifers.

His first calf is now approximately one year old. We are looking forward to breeding superb animals in the future due to the diversity MD offers to our herds.

OD Genetics

OD is renowned in the industry for his extraordinary progeny. Although he himself measured only 42″, he sired a number of sons who measured between 49″ – 52″. His prepotency and genetic supremacy can clearly be seen in the phenotypical traits of his progeny.

Castle de Wildt Superb Roan Stud Females

For the past few years, Castle de Wildt focused on buying the best possible female roans from the studs of Tswalu, Percy Five, Norman Adami, Beyers Gerber, Tienie Neethling and Johan Kriek. Attention was paid to good body conformation and wide, symmetrical horn shape. The majority of our top stud females measures between 22″ and 25″. Breeding these females with our exemplary bulls sprouted young offspring with visibly superior genetic characteristics!

In biology and especially genetics, a mutant is an organism or a new genetic character arising or resulting from an instance of mutation, which is a base-pair sequence change within the DNA of a gene or chromosome of an organism. The natural occurrence of genetic mutations is integral to the process of evolution.
To our surprise, this white nyala ewe was born out of our breeding herds. We have subsequently entered her into an agreed mutual breeding project with a white male, to establish whether or not this animal can reproduce true to her own unique phenotype. As a matter of principle, Castle de Wildt does not support breeding with animals who do not breed true to their character…Read More

For the past two years, Castle de Wildt has progressively invested in oryx females with horn measurements of between 40″ – 48″. In the process we bred a group of top golden and red split females. In the ongoing quest to couple these females with suitable gold and red bulls, we trust that we will soon showcase offspring of above average quality.

Castle de Wildt also succeeded in establishing oryx in the bushveld, to such an extent that we are now able to sell well adapted healthy, busveld oryx.

Castle de Wildt boasts three kudu bulls measuring above 60″ in our Limpopo kudu stud programme. We firmly believe that the continued manifestation of superior animals are dependent on good quality genetic breeding stock.

Castle de Wildt attained its first herd of heartwater springbok in 1997, and are indeed privileged that all our springbok have subsequently developed a natural resistance to heartwater disease – the ultimate threat to springbok in the Bushveld. In ensuring that we keep abreast of our heartwater free breeding programs, we research and investigate the origin of our new breeding stock in order to confirm that the herd and their offspring are in good health and disease free.

The heartwater resistance is not genetically carried over to the offspring in the event that the parents were vaccinated with heartwater blood. The proof of the immunity against heartwater disease is in the thriving offspring, a quality that is evident on first glance in the Castle de Wildt springbok herds.

As the say in the classics, dynamite comes in small packages. We introduced our small antelope which includes mountain reedbuck, blue duiker, klipspringer, bushbuck, steenbok and reedbuck to our camp breeding system. We soon observed that these little tykes were thriving, and they are now very much at the centre of our hearts. All these small species proved fertile and produced healthy offspring, confirming that they are indeed well adapted and happy in their environment. It is equally important to us to ensure that these little guys adapt well to their new environment when being sold.

Since 2007, Castle de Wildt focused on buying the best possible black impala genetics for our breeding programs. During the last three years, we started to reap the benefits of good genetic matching, and are proud to say that we bred two rams who measured 24″ in adulthood, and numerous others measuring 22″+.

Although there is a very limited gene pool at our disposal, Castle de Wildt recently took up the challenge to breed the unique golden zebra species. Characteristics of the golden zebra include blue eyes and gold coloured stripes as opposed to the common breed who has black stripes. Though a long term breeding programme is foreseen, we are confident and excited by the challenge, and hope to soon make golden zebra available to the market.

The roan antelope is a savanna antelope found in West, Central, East and Southern Africa. Roan antelope are one of the largest species of antelope. The name roan is derived from the colour roe (reddish brown), and the antelope appears to have two prominent colour phenotypes – a more reddish brown colour and a strawberry red colour.  Utah’s is phenotypically a strawberry coloured roan.  With very rare 32 4/8” genetics, Utah is a fine example of specimen, not only for his unique colour, but also for his perfect symmetrical horns shape.
